Reclaimed Baptist?

Words have a way of changing their meaning over time. Just ask your kids and they will tell you that the word groovy doesn’t mean what it used to when you were a kid. So the first question when seeing this idea of Reclaimed Baptist would be, why Baptist? This is a great question that demands an answer. Baptists are known for what is called the Baptist Distinctives. These distinctives were not something that a group of people just came up with because they thought it was a good idea. Many of these distinctives you will find in other churches but a Baptist Church is known because they adhere to all of them not just some. So here is a reference of what they are.
  • Biblical Authority
  • Autonomy of the Local Church
  • Priesthood of the Believer
  • Two Ordinances
  • Individual Soul Liberty
  • Saved, Baptized Church Membership
  • Two Offices
  • Separation of Church and State

Sadly many churches that call themselves Baptists are not truly that at all.  They do not follow these biblical distinctives. It is so easy to put Baptist on the sign but very hard to put Baptist in the pulpit or in the DNA of the church.

So you might be thinking, OK that is cool but what does the Reclaimed part have to do with anything. Well, we do not shy away from being a true Baptist Church but we do shy away from what many people have brought along as the baggage to go along with the word Baptist. If you have any history with Baptists that didn’t follow these distinctives, we believe that you will find Our River Church to be a refreshing reprieve from the insanity of the baggage that people have made the word Baptist carry along with it.  Baptist doesn’t mean a certain style of music, a dictatorial pastor or a group of things that you can and cannot do.

Our desire is to reclaim the true historic value of a word that has a lot of meaning.  We are Baptists just probably not the Baptists you have come to believe are really Baptists. We want to take that word back and make it what it used to be.  We believe the Bible above the opinion of any man or men including our Pastors.  Come visit with us and let’s talk about how Our River Church might be a fit for you, and if it isn’t I promise I will tell you that as well.

We know that there is no human being has all the answers to life’s deepest questions (including our pastors) because of that we will always seek to walk alongside others in their pursuit of Jesus.

We seek to engage in relationships and together seek to grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ and His Word.

So here is the invitation, why don’t you come and join us in this pursuit?  The truth is WE ARE BETTER TOGETHER!!

We grow in relationships with each other because we are all working toward the same goal and when we advance we all celebrate and when we have a setback it is something that we all feel and hurt because of.

The way we accomplish this is through investing our lives in others. We grow into maturity and then we bring along someone else and help them grow as we also continue to grow. We long to have and build our lives around relationships that matter. You matter to God and you matter to us.
